Highlight Comparison : essence, the Balm, MAC, Maybelline & Dior

Today I have something a little different to share with you. Aside from nail polish, I am also obsessed with make-up and have recently fallen for highlighting my face. My the Balm order finally arrived from HauteLook so I decided to swatch the highlights I have - high-end and drugstore - to show you the differences and what I like about each one.

The contenders:
Let's start with essence which is the lightest of all of the highlights I own. First, essence is cheap which is a huge plus. Second, for the price, their products are generally pretty good quality. I picked this one up because the pattern on the powder is adorable and it was like $2.99 at Shopper's Drug Mart. This is the only colour it came in and it is very light and also has some noticeable sparkle in it which I don't love. The main downfall of this product for me though, is that it's quite powdery and has a lot of fall-out. Still, it's cheap. :)

Moving on to the Balm, which is the newest in my collection. Mary-Lou Manizer is a beauty blogger favourite and it's with good reason. The texture! I can't say enough good things. It's super soft and buttery and so pigmented. Just a light tap with your brush will likely give you more product than you need. The light gold/champagne colour is gorgeous and it leaves a lovely shimmer on your cheekbones. It's love!

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish (MSF) in Soft & Gentle is another beauty blogger favourite. The MSF formula is highly pigmented and soft but not as buttery as the Balm, likely because it's baked and so a harder surface. This one is a gorgeous champagne colour and I think it goes the best with my skin tone. I find this one has more sparkle than the Balm and it's a little more noticeable on my skin.

Maybelline recently came out with their Face Studio line and, I gotta say, I'm impressed. The prices are certainly on the high end for drugstore (I paid $16.99 at Shoppers Drug Mart) but I would easily say that the Master Hi-Light compares with the MAC MSF. I love the woven pattern and the ease of blending all of the colours. The texture on this was great and a swirl of the brush picks up the perfect amount of product.

Finally, the most expensive member of collection, Dior Amber Diamond. Again, this is one that I picked up because of all of the hype and I'm really glad I did. I love the colour strip configuration which allows you to combine all five colours or just pick and choose for a lighter or darker look. I generally combine all five which gives a lovely light bronze highlight. This one and the Maybelline one will be perfect for summer when my face gets a little darker.

I swatched all five on the inside of my arm and took photos in slightly different lighting to show the shimmer and differences in colour.

Which one is your favourite? Is there a highlight you think I should try?

Comparison : Save the drama

I had part two of my KBShimmer post ready to go but then there was some drama on Facebook this morning so I thought I'd post this instead.

There's been some discussion today about the difference between Pretty Serious Naughty Night Shift Nurse (NNSN) and Colors by Llarowe Hellcat and whether or not they are dupes. For those that don't know, NNSN was released in extremely limited quantities and was in very high demand. I have a crazy generous friend that sent me a bottle for Christmas and I had ordered Hellcat during the pre-order so I thought I'd do a comparison.

As you can see in the first picture, NNSN is far more sheer than Hellcat and the base colour is more of a dusty mauve while Hellcat is most definitely purple. NNSN also has frost whereas Hellcat does not (as far as I can tell.) Hellcat is quite a bit thicker than NNSN but I wouldn't call is goopy by any stretch. NNSN took three coats to become opaque while Hellcat was opaque in two. If you were to wear NNSN on its own, it is definitely different than Hellcat. They look a little more similar when NNSN is over black but still, I would not call them dupes.

Please note, I am not affiliated with either brand in any way and think both make quality products. I simply wanted to highlight the differences and help to clear up any confusion. This post will be picture heavy but I wanted to try and catch different angles.

Naughty Night Shift Nurse is shown on the middle finger and pinkie and Hellcat is on the index and ring fingers.

1 coat NNSN and Hellcat

3 coats NNSN and 2 coats Hellcat
3 coats NNSN and 2 coats Hellcat
3 coats NNSN and 2 coats Hellcat

2 coats of NNSN over black and 2 coats of Hellcat

2 coats of NNSN over black and 2 coats of Hellcat
2 coats of NNSN over black and 2 coats of Hellcat
2 coats of NNSN over black and 2 coats of Hellcat

Do you own either? Both? Would you call them dupes?

Comparison : Battle of the Mattes

*ding, ding* Round two! Today I'm comparing several mattes. I was lucky enough to receive the re-released Zoya matte velvets from a friend recently and wanted to compare two of the Zoya mattes (Lolly is from a prior release) with other brands in my collection. First up we have pinks.

I have three matte pinks in my collection - Zoya Lolly, Manglaze Lesbihonest, and OPI La Paz-itively Hot matte - and you'll see that none of them are dupes. The Manglaze is much darker (more of a raspberry) than either the OPI or Zoya and the shimmer is much more pronounced. It was also the easiest to work with of the three. Photos show three coats of polish with no top coat.

Next up is green. Zoya Verushka and Manglaze Nawsome Sauce were definitely closer in the shimmer department but the base colour of Nawsome Sauce has more of a yellow tone than Verushka. Both had great formulas. Photos show two coats of polish with no top coat.

Are you a fan of matte polish? Pink or green?

NB: I would love it if you "like" me on Facebook and Instagram - makes it easier to keep up-to-date on my posts. When I reach 100 Facebook likes I will be holding a giveaway and who doesn't love free stuff? <3

Comparison : Shimm Shimma

Today I have my first comparison post of the week (another coming on Friday). I love looking at these posts and as my collection grows I find that I have several colours that are similar but not the same. (As we all know. heh.)

The first match-up is Zoya Jem and Chanel Taboo. Someone mentioned recently that Jem was a dupe for Taboo and, since I have both, I thought I'd put that to the test. From the first brush stroke you can tell that these two aren't dupes - the base colours are completely different; Zoya is purple and Chanel is navy. The shimmer in Jem is more pronounced on the nail but the glitter particles are also larger than Chanel. Both are gorgeous and I'm glad I own both. Photos show two coats of each polish with no top coat.

Next up is a duo I've wanted to compare since I received my October What's In-die Box. Unfortunately, both of these are hard to find but I thought I'd post it anyway. At first glance I thought that Lilypad Lacquer Queen of Halloween was a dupe for Enchanted Polish Mr. Burgundy but, as you can see in the swatch photos, they are really close but not dupes. The base of the Lilypad is more purple whereas the EP definitely has a burgundy base. The holo on both is very similar but the EP has slightly more bend. Again, I'm happy (and lucky) to own both. Photos show two coats of each polish with no top coat.

Any comparison requests? Let me know and I'll see what I have in my stash.

NB: Thoughts on the darker, larger watermark?
